What is oral and dental surgery?

Oral and dental surgery covers procedures that go beyond a simple extraction, where the gum or bone has to be opened to remove or repair a tooth. It includes surgical removal of impacted or broken teeth, wisdom-tooth removal and minor surgery around the tooth root.

At Prudent Dental Care Clinic in Viman Nagar, oral surgery is carried out by Dr. Puja Bansal (BDS), who works as a dental surgeon with 27 years of experience. Every case begins with an examination and X-ray so the procedure is planned safely around your needs.

Key takeaways

  • Oral surgery is needed when a tooth is impacted, broken below the gum line, or cannot be removed by a simple extraction.
  • Common procedures include surgical removal of wisdom teeth, surgical extractions and apicoectomy (a root-end procedure).
  • At Prudent Dental Care Clinic, oral surgery is performed by Dr. Puja Bansal (BDS), a dental surgeon, not an orthodontist.
  • Most minor oral surgery is done under local anaesthesia while you stay awake but feel no pain.
  • Cost is quoted individually after a consultation and X-ray. There is no fixed online price.
Procedures

Oral surgery procedures we perform

These are surgical procedures, not orthodontic ones. Orthodontics straightens teeth. Oral surgery removes or repairs them.

Surgical tooth extraction

Removal of a tooth that has broken at or below the gum line, or is otherwise too difficult to remove with a simple extraction. The gum is gently opened to access and remove the tooth.

Impacted wisdom-tooth removal

Wisdom teeth that are stuck against the bone or neighbouring teeth, repeatedly infected or causing crowding may be removed surgically after assessment.

Apicoectomy (root-end surgery)

When a root canal alone has not settled an infection at the tip of the root, the inflamed tissue and root tip are accessed through the gum and removed.

Minor oral surgery

Other small surgical steps around the gum and bone, such as exposing a tooth or removing a small lesion. We plan and explain these at your consultation.

Some problems can be treated without surgery. For example, a simple tooth extraction or a root canal treatment to save the tooth. We aim for the least invasive option that resolves the problem.

Step by Step

What does oral surgery involve?

1

Consultation & X-ray

We examine the tooth and take X-rays to see its position, roots and the surrounding bone before deciding on treatment.

2

Local anaesthesia

The area is fully numbed so you stay comfortable and feel no pain during the procedure.

3

The procedure

The gum is gently opened where needed, the tooth or affected tissue is removed or treated, and the site is cleaned and stitched if required.

4

Aftercare & healing

You receive clear aftercare instructions to help the area heal and to reduce swelling and discomfort.

Healing times vary from person to person. Follow your aftercare instructions closely. That is the best way to recover comfortably and lower the risk of complications.

When oral surgery may be recommended

  • A wisdom tooth is impacted, repeatedly infected or crowding other teeth
  • A tooth has broken at or below the gum line and cannot be removed simply
  • A root-tip infection has not settled after root canal treatment
  • A tooth needs to be exposed or removed before further dental work
  • A small lesion or tissue around a tooth needs to be removed and examined

What about cost?

There is no single price for oral surgery because every case is different. The total depends on which tooth is involved, how complex the surgery is, and whether any extra step is needed. After your consultation and X-ray, we give you a clear, written quote so you know exactly what to expect.

FAQ

Oral surgery FAQs

What is the difference between an extraction and oral surgery?
A simple extraction removes a tooth that is fully visible and loosens easily. Oral surgery is needed when a tooth is impacted, broken at the gum line or below it, or when the gum and bone have to be opened to remove it. Both are done under local anaesthesia.
Is oral surgery painful?
The procedure itself is carried out under local anaesthesia, so the area is numb and you should not feel pain while it is done. Some swelling or soreness for a few days afterwards is normal and is usually managed with ordinary pain relief and the aftercare advice we give you.
Do I need my wisdom teeth removed?
Not everyone does. Wisdom teeth are usually removed only when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed or crowding other teeth. After an examination and X-ray, Dr. Bansal will explain whether removal is advisable in your case or whether the tooth can be left in place.
How long does it take to recover after a surgical extraction?
Most people feel noticeably better within a few days, though full healing of the socket takes longer. Recovery varies from person to person depending on the tooth, your general health and how closely the aftercare instructions are followed.
Will I be put to sleep for the procedure?
Most minor oral surgery is performed under local anaesthesia while you stay awake but feel no pain. General anaesthesia is reserved for specific, more complex situations and is not used for routine surgical extractions.
How much does oral surgery cost in Pune?
There is no single fixed price. The cost depends on the tooth involved, how complex the surgery is and whether any extra step is needed. We provide a clear, personalised quote after your consultation and X-ray rather than a price online.
