What are full mouth dental implants?
Full mouth dental implants replace all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw with a fixed set of new teeth supported by dental implants. You don't get one implant per tooth. A complete arch is anchored on a small number of implant posts placed into the jawbone.
At Prudent Dental Care Clinic in Viman Nagar, full-arch treatment is planned by Dr. Puja Bansal (BDS), an implantologist with 27 years of experience, trained through a Certificate Course in Oral Implantology (D.Y. Patil College, Pune, 2018) and registered with the Maharashtra State Dental Council (reg. A8860). In practice at DNK Square since 2005 and open seven days, 10 AM to 8 PM, the clinic follows a strict sterilisation protocol.
Key takeaways
- Full mouth dental implants replace all the teeth in an arch with a fixed bridge on a small number of implants.
- All-on-4 and All-on-6 mean a full arch supported on four or six implants; the right number depends on your anatomy.
- Unlike removable dentures, a fixed full-arch bridge does not move while eating and helps preserve jawbone.
- Bone volume, gum health, smoking and diabetes control all affect candidacy. Assessment and imaging come first.
- Treatment is staged over several months. Cost is quoted individually after assessment, with no fixed online price.
What do All-on-4 and All-on-6 mean?
All-on-4 and All-on-6 describe a full-arch concept in which a complete row of replacement teeth is supported on four or six implants. The implants are positioned where the jawbone offers the best support, and a connected bridge of teeth is then fixed onto them.
The names describe how the new teeth are supported. They are not a brand or a promise of results. Implants are placed where the jawbone is most favourable, sometimes at an angle to use the available bone. Whether four, six or another number suits you depends on your anatomy, confirmed by examination and imaging.
Is this page for you?
- Missing most or all teeth in one or both jaws
- Remaining teeth are failing and cannot be saved
- Loose or uncomfortable full dentures
- Want fixed teeth that stay put day and night
Missing a single tooth instead? A single-tooth implant is usually the better fit.
How do full-arch implants compare with removable dentures?
A full-arch implant bridge is fixed in place, so it does not move while you eat or speak. The implants transmit chewing force to the jawbone, which helps preserve it. Conventional dentures rest on the gums, can move as the bone changes, and are removed for cleaning.
| Aspect | Full-arch implant bridge | Conventional removable denture |
|---|---|---|
| Stability | Fixed in place; does not shift when eating or speaking | Rests on the gums; may loosen as the jaw changes |
| Jawbone | Chewing force passes to the bone, helping preserve it | Underlying bone tends to shrink over the years |
| Eating | Chewing feels closer to natural teeth | Lower chewing force; hard or chewy foods can be difficult |
| Cleaning | Cleaned in the mouth, with aids for under the bridge | Removed daily for cleaning |
| Surgery | Requires implant surgery and a healing period | No surgery needed |
Neither option is best for everyone. Well-made dentures are a dependable, non-surgical choice. Dr. Bansal will advise which suits you.
Who is a candidate for full mouth dental implants?
Candidacy depends on your general health, the volume and quality of jawbone available, and the health of your gums. Smoking and poorly controlled diabetes can affect healing and implant integration, so these are reviewed carefully. A clinical examination and imaging are needed before anyone can be confirmed as suitable.
Not everyone is a candidate, and saying so is part of an honest assessment. Where bone has shrunk, we may discuss grafting. Sometimes a removable option is simply the safer recommendation.
Factors Dr. Bansal will assess
- Volume and quality of jawbone in the arch being treated
- Gum health and any active gum disease
- Smoking, which can impair healing around implants
- Diabetes control and other general health conditions
- Failing teeth that may need extraction first
- Your bite, jaw joints and habits such as grinding
What are the stages of full mouth implant treatment?
Treatment is staged over several months: assessment and imaging first, then planning, implant placement, and a healing period while the implants integrate with the bone, before the definitive full-arch bridge is fitted. Some patients also need preparatory work first, such as extractions or grafting.
1
Consultation & imaging
A full examination with X-rays and scans maps your bone, gums and bite, and confirms whether full-arch implants suit you.
2
Treatment planning
Implant positions, bridge design and the sequence of visits are planned; you receive a written plan before starting.
3
Implant placement
Under local anaesthesia, the implants are placed into the jawbone; failing teeth may be removed at this stage if planned.
4
Healing & integration
Over the following months the implants integrate with the bone, with reviews and guidance on eating and cleaning.
5
Definitive bridge
Once integration is confirmed, the final bridge is made to suit your bite and appearance and fixed onto the implants.
Sometimes a temporary fixed set of teeth can be attached soon after placement (see same-day dental implants). Many patients are not candidates for this, and a conventional healing period is planned.
How do I look after full mouth dental implants?
Care for a full-arch implant bridge much as you would natural teeth: brush twice daily, clean under and around the bridge with the aids your dentist recommends, and attend regular reviews. Professional cleaning and periodic checks of the implants, gums and bite help problems get caught early.
Interdental brushes or a water flosser may be advised for under the bridge, alongside routine scaling & polishing. Gums around implants need care just as teeth do.
How is the cost of treatment decided?
There is no single price for full mouth implant treatment. The total depends on how many implants are placed, the material of the fixed bridge, and whether extractions, grafting or other preparatory work is needed. After your assessment you receive a clear written plan and quote before treatment begins.
