What are inlays and onlays?
Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations that repair a back tooth with more damage than a simple filling can handle. Made to fit in a dental laboratory, an inlay sits within the chewing surface, while an onlay also covers one or more of the cusps that have been affected.
At Prudent Dental Care Clinic in Viman Nagar, inlays and onlays are placed by Dr. Puja Bansal (BDS), who has 27 years of experience in restorative dentistry. Every case starts with an examination. The tooth is assessed before any treatment is planned.
Key takeaways
- Inlays and onlays are lab-made restorations that repair moderately damaged or decayed back teeth.
- An inlay fits within the chewing surface; an onlay also covers one or more of the tooth’s cusps.
- They can be a more conservative, longer-lasting option than a large direct filling, while preserving more natural tooth than a crown.
- Treatment is usually completed over two appointments, with bonding at the second visit.
- At Prudent Dental Care Clinic, they are placed by Dr. Puja Bansal (BDS); cost is quoted individually after a consultation.
What does getting an inlay or onlay involve?
1
Examination & planning
We examine the tooth and review your options to decide whether an inlay or an onlay is the right restoration.
2
Tooth preparation
Under local anaesthesia, the decay or old filling is removed and the tooth is gently shaped to receive the restoration.
3
Impression or scan
An impression or digital scan is taken so the inlay or onlay can be custom-made in a dental laboratory. A temporary may be placed.
4
Bonding & bite check
At the next visit the finished restoration is bonded into place and the bite is checked and adjusted for comfort.
Once the restoration is bonded, you get aftercare advice. Good oral hygiene and regular check-ups help an inlay or onlay last.
Filling vs inlay/onlay vs crown
| Option | How it is made | Tooth removed | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Filling | Shaped directly in the tooth in one visit | Least | Small to moderate cavities or chips |
| Inlay / onlay | Custom-made in a laboratory, then bonded in | Moderate (preserves more tooth than a crown) | Moderately damaged back teeth; fractured or large old fillings |
| Crown | Custom-made cap that covers the whole tooth | Most | Heavily broken-down or weakened teeth |
The right choice depends on how much healthy tooth remains. Dr. Bansal will recommend what suits your tooth at your consultation.
When an inlay or onlay may help
- Broken or fractured back teeth
- Decayed teeth that are too damaged for a simple filling
- Fractured or worn-out old fillings
- Large existing fillings that need replacing
- Restoring strength while keeping more natural tooth than a crown
What about cost?
There is no single price for an inlay or onlay because every tooth is different. The total depends on which tooth is involved, the material chosen and how much of the tooth needs restoring. Once we have examined the tooth and talked through your options, we give you a clear written quote. You know what to expect before anything begins.
